I am a Consultant Neurological and Spinal Surgeon. My NHS practice is based at Southmead Hospital in Bristol following the relocation of neurosurgical services from Frenchay Hospital in 2014.
I graduated from medical school at the University of Birmingham in 1993 having also completed an Intercalated BSc. Degree with Honours in Pharmacology in 1990. I completed higher surgical training in neurosurgery at Cambridge, Plymouth and Bristol. In 2003 I was awarded a Doctorate (MD) from the University of Birmingham for my research on cervical spine arthroplasty (disc replacement surgery) and spinal biomechanics. I was appointed as the National Spine Fellow in Leeds for subspeciality experience in both the orthopaedic and neurosurgical aspects of complex spinal surgery in 2006. Subsequently in 2007 I was awarded an HCA International Traveling Fellowship to study minimally invasive and complex spine surgery in New York and Memphis, USA.
My first consultant post was at the Walton Centre for Neurology & Neurosurgery in Liverpool from 2007 – 2010 before I moved to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. I am a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and hold membership of several learned societies including The Royal Society of Medicine, The Society of British Neurological Surgeons, The British Association of Spine Surgeons, The European Spine Society and AO Spine International. My academic interests relate to my clinical practice and include; healthcare economics, the application of new imaging modalities to spinal research, computer assisted spinal surgery and cervical disc replacements. I have published in peer reviewed journals and presented internationally on cervical spine arthroplasty (disc replacement), computer assisted spinal surgery and evidence based spinal surgery. My medico-legal activity is exclusively dedicated to spinal conditions.
Between 2014 and 2017 I was Clinical Director for Neurosciences at North Bristol NHS Trust and in April 2017 was appointed as Divisional Clinical Director for the combined directorates of Musculoskeletal and Neurological Sciences. This is a large and busy portfolio of clinical services that includes several regional services, Major Trauma Centre, Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Adult Neurosciences and Bristol Centre for Enablement as well as local services for the North Bristol Trust catchment area.
